Footscray Park Bowling Club

The Footscray Park Bowling Club has a proud history going back to its creation at a meeting held at the Footscray Mechanics Institute on October 6th, 1950. The greens were laid down at the present Ballarat Road site in 1952, with social play in 1953/54 and pennant beginning in 1954/55.

In its heydays in the ‘50s and ‘60s there were up to 300 members, six men’s and five women’s teams. The three greens were used every day of the week and the club was the place in the west for electric light evening bowls.

As with most inner-suburban bowls clubs, our membership declined as the bowlers aged, and a plethora of other activities became increasingly assessable to the community. Fortunately; a few years ago the Club was successfully revived by an enthusiastic committee who, by refocusing our development strategies around being a community asset, have positioned the club for significant medium-term growth and long-term sustainability.

Consistent with this strategy, and with the particular support of Maribyrnong City Council, the club embarked on a program of capital works to enhance both our offering to bowlers and to the broader community.

Over the past few years, this program has delivered many notable improvements including, refurbishment of both pennant greens, refurbishment of (internal) club rooms, car parking facilities and a series of environmentally sustainable upgrades including solar panels.
